LIving Walls - What Do You Need To Know?

Lately, there's been a worldwide trend towards more eco-friendly living so as to reduce the carbon footprint that each of us has on our planet. One of the ways that many people have found to live greener is to create what is called a living wall, sometimes called a green wall. These are self-sufficient gardens that are made to grow vertically in the shape of a wall. They are made by putting a growing medium, sometimes just soil, that is encased in a membrane that will then hold the plants and allow them to grow while being irrigated as well.

Most Green Walls Are Designed for Exterior Use

It's quite a bit easier to set up a green wall outside because you don't need to worry about the water runoff, the lighting and other things that would be difficult to do indoors. Outside, you can include various kinds of flowers and matching plants to make your wall an incredibly beautiful addition to your home.

There also drip irrigation systems that are easily installed that can regulate tiny amounts of water to keep the wall moist enough to thrive, but not too wet, to prevent diseases. Drip watering systems are highly economical because water is delivered very close to the root system and has no time to evaporate into the air.

Living Walls Make Excellent Noise Pollution Barriers

If you have a noisy neighbour, a loud factory, or a busy street that you'd like to reduce the noise from, the perfect sound absorbent is a living wall. Since they are fairly thick and made of organic material, they are the perfect blockade for even the noisiest busy street. They are also excellent for providing shade and coolness from the hot sun during the heat of the day.

If your green wall is carefully designed and positioned it can provide a solar barrier to keep the outside of your home cool during hot summer days and reduce your need for air-conditioning inside the home. This also reduces the ultraviolet rays that can shine through your windows and bleach your carpet and upholstered furniture as well.

If you're curious about building your own wall, around your garden, deck, patio or home, you can see plenty of different pictures on the Internet then choose the style that suits your decor the best. There are also videos showing the construction of the walls using many different recyclables or free materials that can be found around the home.
